MARINER'S ANNUAL
was conceived in the 1950s by Charles Kerr. He attended
the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.,
and sailed both wet and dry cargo ships. Eventually,
he joined the purchasing staff of a major tanker company
ashore. He understood the problems involved with communications
between ships, purchasing offices, and suppliers,
and he saw the need for a technically complete and up-to-date
book that could be used to bridge the communications
gap.
He prepared a prototype catalogue of 400 pages that
was published in 1958. Soon after, the 40 shipping
companies who had agreed to use MARINER'S
ANNUAL as an experiment began to suggest
ways to improve the book for its second edition. Charles
was joined by his wife, Doro, and together the Kerrs
developed an idea into an institution that flourished
for over five decades.
In 2010, MARINER'S ANNUAL started the next phase in its journey, as Charles Kerr Enterprises was acquired by ShipServ, the leading maritime e-marketplace. |
